Square Butte is one of only a handful of climbing areas in North Dakota, and the only one on public lands that offers a nice selection of rope climbing options. Support the local climbing scene and purchase the excellent guidebook Northern Buttey: Rock Climbs of North Dakota, which is of better quality than many well traveled areas can offer.
The climbing at Square Butte consists of both bolted and traditional routes on surprisingly high-quality sandstone for the most part. Since the butte is located on national grasslands, free dispersed camping can be found along the final approach road.
